Rodriguez swept cross town rival Armijo as the Varsity Girls won 123 to 84 while the Varsity Boys finished 2nd and 3rd in the final 400 Free Relay to nip Armijo 86-84.
For the Varsity Boys the slim two point victory underscored the importance of each and every swimmer in each and every event. Despite winning only 4 of 12 events, the team's depth paid off and a single change in the finish order in any event favoring Armijo would have swung the victory to Armijo.
Alex Mendoza finished lst in the 500 free and broke his own Rodriguez 100 breaststroke record, lowering his old time of 1:08 by three seconds to 1:05.49 in an exciting race won by Noah Dennis from Armijo in a time of 1:04.89 as both swimmers achieved lifetime bests in this dual. He was also the lead-off swimmer on the winning 200 Free Relay team with Kolt Reagle, Virgil Thomas and Pierre Cineas.
The RHS Varsity Girls had two double winners. Freshman Dori Dobson finished first in two events, the 100 free and 100 breast with the second fastest RHS 100 breast time of 1:15.65. Dori was on the 1st place 200 free relay team with Maya Moten, Michele Roberts, and Camille Long and anchored the 1st place 400 free relay team with Rachel Balella, Kellie Long and Michele Roberts. Senior Rachel Balella was a double winner in the 200 free and 100 fly.
Other 1st place finishers included the Varsity Girls 200 Medley Relay team with Camille & Kellie Long, Rachel Balella and Maya Moten; Camille Long in the 200 IM, Maya Moten in the 50 free, Michele Roberts in the 500 free and Taylor Saenz in 100 back.
First place finishers for the Varsity Boys included Daniel Guzman in the 50 free and Virgil Thomas in the 100 free.
